Development
Kloof Pre Primary believes in the total development of each child. We believe that
academic development is as important as physical, emotional, social, cultural and
spiritual development. It is only when all of these areas are developed that the child
can go on to reaching his full potential.
Finding this balance at an early age is crucial for a child’s success in formal education
– the creating of the foundation on which the blocks of knowledge can be built.
The school seeks to develop each of these areas of development in the children by:
-
carefully planned lessons and structured activities
-
an exceptional variety of free play areas designed to foster specific development
-
highly qualified, enthusiastic staff who are kept abreast of the latest educational trends
-
an exciting extra-curricular programme
-
a variety of entertainment, educational shows and theme related outings
Academic
Academic development is approached in a variety of ways to cater to the needs of
each child. Concepts are introduced and explored through as much sensory
experience as possible, because we know that children learn best this way.
The number of children per group is monitored to optimize classroom learning.
Free play areas have been carefully designed to be stimulating and educational. Each area encourages academic development in a unique way. During free play the teachers
closely monitor the children and their development is carefully noted as they make
their choices:
-
the fantasy area
-
the art room
-
the puzzle room
-
the block corner
-
the farm yard
-
the sand pit
-
water play
-
the cycle track
-
climbing frames
At our school we encourage parent involvement, making the children’s interests our
common goal in order to achieve the best we possibly can for each child. Detailed
progress reports are written twice a year and communicated to parents with parent
interviews held with each child’s group teacher.
Physical
In our large, protected garden, we are able to stimulate the children’s physical
development in both structured and free play time through gross and fine motor skills
used in:
-
woodwork
-
cycle track activity
-
cross country track
-
gym apparatus
-
the farmyard
-
climbing frames
-
the sand pit
-
balancing beams
-
block play
Emotional
With an emphasis on emotional intelligence, the emotional development of the children is a primary focus. As this affects all other areas of development, we encourage emotional well-being in the manner in which we interact with each individual.
Drama, art and music are all used to emphasize positive reinforcement.
Our approach to discipline respects the child’s dignity at all times.

Social
Group work is encouraged where appropriate, where invaluable social skills like
tolerance, compromise and empathy are learned. Mutual respect is always encouraged, as children of all ages are encouraged to interact.
Childhood is short and precious – every child deserves the opportunity to experience it
to the full.
Cultural
As we service the entire Kloof community, our children come from a variety of
backgrounds. We encourage the children to embrace the uniqueness of each individual.
Music, art and drama are presented in a classroom situation as well as being available
during free play.
While our art and fantasy rooms are very well stocked in order to encourage creativity
and allow the children to get lost in the wonderful world of role-play and imagination,
our collection of percussion instruments are varied enough to catch the musical imagination of any child.
The library has been carefully planned to encourage imagination through reading and
each child takes home a library book every week.
Spiritual
We are a Christian based school, which embraces children of all beliefs, respecting
the individuality of others. We learn from our differences and seek to understand what
makes us each an individual.
After Care
Our after care facility embraces children of all ages in a warm homely environment. A
fully qualified pre-school teacher runs this flexible programme with a team of assistants. The children that remain in their care are happy, safe, supervised and
busy.
School Management
Kloof Pre Primary is a state affiliated school, with a minimal government subsidy. A
governing body that consists of the principal, staff members and democratically elected parents manages the school.
We encourage parent participation at all levels through various activities and
sub-committees. While fund raising events are kept to the minimum, we try and instill
a sense of community in the children through different charity programmes throughout
the year.
